LOST REVOLUTION
Dark, intricate and moody, Lost Revolution is the new jewellery label from Sydney’s Hannah Smith. As the name suggests, Hannah’s pieces are a rebellion against the continuously revolving styles of fashion and instead showcase something new, raw and previously unfulfilled. Her debut collection, Dark Matter, is filled with organic crystal shards, lux black diamonds and sterling silver to create a fascinating textural mix with a¬n underlying cult feel. “Dark Matter was inspired by the crystals I used. They look like they have tiny light-filled universes in them and thus, an otherworldly theme was born. Some pieces have moving and spinning parts… The globes bangle and necklace remind me of orbiting solar systems or spinning planets.”
Coming from a fashion design background, jewellery design presented a new exploration of creativity for Hannah that was not controlled and confined by the commerciality and fast-paced nature of garment creation. “Creating my own jewellery line seemed like a natural progression and I feel I can be as creatively dark as I want,” she says. “I think working as a fashion designer, I’m always thinking of styles as an entire outfit and of course an outfit is not complete without accessories… My jewellery designs are pieces that I would wear myself. It’s so refreshing coming from fashion, to be able to design a collection that is exactly me.”
The inspirations behind and processes of creating each piece comes back to the crystals used and the mystical properties they possess. A mix of natural and cut crystals, which have been a fascination of Hannah’s since childhood, are handpicked and sourced from around the world to be incorporated into the range. “I usually start by researching a particular theme or idea. I look at crystals and how they would fit into that theme by colour, crystal properties and shapes, and then, I start sketching. I draw each piece in Illustrator to get the proportions correct and once I’m
happy with how they look, everything gets packaged up and sent off to East Java to be created,” explains Hannah.
The second collection from Lost Revolution is currently underway and stays true to Hannah’s love of moody romanticism. Entitled La Vie, La Mort (The Life, The Death), the collection will be much finer and features delicate blood red garnets. “La Vie, La Mort is about mementos that one carries to remind them of a certain person or thing. The range is a lot finer than Dark Matter with some key pieces being the memory rings. I’m about to start working on a third range as well, and because I’ve had so many requests, I’m also going to do a capsule collection for men.”
Creating a unique aesthetic through not only the jewellery itself, but also branding, look book imagery and accompanying videos, Lost Revolution is reaching out to a smaller, underground audience through a demographic of people who live and breath a dark and mysterious lifestyle. Currently sitting on the cusp of cult status, keep your ear to the ground to be a part of theLost Revolution.
